Tory mayoral candidate and Labour MP join forces to back fans’ campaign to return to Craven Cottage.

Back To The Cottage Press Release - 14/03/03

Labour MP Steve Pound and Steve Norris, the Conservative candidate for Mayor of London, have unwittingly joined forces in the quest to get Fulham FC back to Craven Cottage. The two Steves, passionate Fulham fans, are interviewed in the new issue of Fulham fanzine "There’s Only One F in Fulham" (TOOFIF) out this weekend, and both insist Fulham should head for home.

Steve PoundWhen probed on the subject Steve Pound, MP for Ealing North, pulled no punches: "God yes. Yes, yes yes! We're umbilically linked with the Cottage. We ARE Fulham FC, the riverside team - we could move back next week, we could put in temporary 'stands' at the Putney and Hammersmith Ends, giving us something like a 16,000 capacity - and we'd sell it out. Instead of which we're selling 13,000, at the most, at Loftus Road. We must go back, and I just hope to god we do."

Steve NorrisIn the blue corner, Steve Norris was just as emphatic: "I want us to go back to the Cottage...I love watching Premiership sides but most of all I love going to the Cottage." He added: "Why not redevelop Craven Cottage to give an all-seater capacity, cover the away stand and put the seating in at both goal ends and settle for about a 20,000 crowd but for a cost of probably less than £20 million?"

The likelihood of a return is anybody's guess, but Back to the Cottage spokesman Tom Greatrex insists in the fanzine that it is both feasible and viable. The fans’ group, recently formed into a Supporters' Trust, are busy putting together professional plans, and intend to present them to the football club later this month.

He says in TOOFIF: "Back to the Cottage is a broad group of people who support Fulham FC and love to see the Club in the Premiership and doing well generally. I think everyone is immensely grateful for that and appreciate the contribution of the Chairman, in particular, in steering Fulham back into the top flight. But there is an important line - the club must be sustainable. The Chairman himself said, when he took over, that his desire was to see Fulham Football Club being self-sustaining in the top division. To do that you need your own stadium. And to do so successfully you need to have a stadium in an area where you can attract support. So even if we can't have the super stadium that was envisaged at Craven Cottage because of rising costs then we should look at ways of building a stadium that doesn't have to cost as much."

Tom adds: "I feel we're at a crossroads - we can either go the Charlton route or the Wimbledon route. Let's get back to our historic home, build up the community involvement and sense of ownership that Charlton supporters have with their club and build a stadium up around it gradually."
